Laugh-In: Goldie Hawn Pays Tribute to Late Actress/Comedian Ruth Buzzi

Goldie Hawn paid tribute to her late Laugh-In co-star Ruth Buzzi, who brought to life Gladys Ormphby, Agnes Gooch, Doris Swizzle, and others.

Long before Saturday Night Live became a staple of sketch comedy, there was Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In with hosts Dan Rowan and Dick Martin, which featured a variety of performers from its cast, random special guests, and musicians, which ran on NBC from 1967-1973. Among the cast members who vaulted to superstardom were Goldie Hawn and Ruth Buzzi. Hawn's signature characters include Sparkle Farkle and Sister Goldie. Buzzi's most popular character was Gladys Ormphby, who dons a hairnet, biting double entendres, and beats other performers with her signature purse. Other characters she played were Agnes Gooch, Busy Buzzi, Doris Swizzle, Laverne Blossom, and more. Hawn paid tribute to her former co-star, who passed on May 1st.

"My Ruthie, you're gone, and it hurts so deeply. I'll always treasure our daily calls, how we could talk endlessly, even after long days. You were my girlfriend, my heart through life's ups and downs," Hawn wrote on Instagram. "You made me laugh like no one else could. You were beyond talented, Ruthie. A one of a kind soul who brought so much laughter and light to the world. Those deep, joyful laughs we shared, especially while making Laugh In, will stay with me forever. I love you. Wishing you peace and beautiful travels in the arms of the angels. ❤️"

Hawn remains one of the few surviving Laugh-In cast members along with Lily Tomlin, Jo Anne Worley, and Mossie Drier. Since the series' end, Hawn remained active in her career until the early 2000s, sporadically taking projects with roles on the animated Phineas and Ferb, Snatched (2017), and two Christmas Chronicle films for Netflix opposite Kurt Russell in 2018 and 2020. Buzzi remained mainly active until the late 2000s with runs on children's programming on Sesame Street and Come on Over. Her final projects were Level 33's animated feature Bongee Bear and the Kingdom of Rhythm, the indie films Glenn's Gotta Go (2020), and One Month Out (2021).
